Eye Health Risks of Smoking

We’re all aware of the harmful effects that smoking can have on our bodies, but many people don’t realize the negative impact that smoking can have on our vision as well.

We’re all aware of the harmful effects that smoking can have on our bodies, but many people don’t realize the negative impact that smoking can have on our vision as well.

The risk of cataracts more than doubles for people who smoke. This disease is the leading cause of blindness in the world and it is estimated that more than 50% of Americans will have a cataract (or had cataract surgery) by the age of 80.

The risk of developing age-related macular degeneration is three times higher if you are a smoker. People with macular degeneration suffer greatly reduced vision as the center of the retina is attacked. Additionally, once vision is lost from the disease, it cannot be recovered.

Simply being around smoke can negatively affect your vision as well. Dry eye is a common side effect of constantly being around smoke and leaves you with irritated, red and watery eyes. Smokers are twice as likely to suffer from dry eye.

These are just some of the reasons why smoking is just not worth it. If you smoke, seek assistance in quitting by visiting smokefree.gov for tips and stories from past smokers.
