About The Light Adjustable Lens
The Light Adjustable Lens (RxLAL™) is a unique intraocular lens (IOL) that distinguishes itself from standard IOLs used in cataract surgery. IOLs are used to replace the natural, clouded lens of the eye that is removed during cataract surgery. While traditional IOLs offer improvements to vision, most patients will still need to rely on eyeglasses or contact lenses to see clearly during certain activities, such as reading or watching television. The RxLAL™ can reduce patients’ dependence on prescription eyewear, allowing them to enjoy crisp vision at all times. This is because the RxLAL™ is fully adjustable after cataract surgery, when the eyes have had time to heal. Changes to the lens’s focusing power are made two to three weeks after surgery, and vision can be previewed by the patient before making a final decision.
RxLAL™ Benefits
Customizable vision after surgery: The ability for the RxLAL™ to be fully customized after cataract surgery is an attractive benefit for many patients. Using traditional IOLs requires doctors to estimate your vision requirements before you have had surgery. While this results in many successful outcomes, achieving the best vision possible requires doctors to see how your eyes have healed before settling on a focusing power for your lenses — an issue that is resolved with the RxLAL™.
Adjustability: After surgery, our doctors will use gentle light technology to make precise adjustments to your lens.
Peace of mind: The concept of adjustable vision after cataract surgery offers peace of mind to patients who may have been concerned about the quality of their vision with fixed lenses. Receiving light treatments to adjust vision and being able to “test drive” this vision for a few days gives patients the confidence to make informed decisions about their vision.
Procedure Details
The process of receiving an RxLAL™ involves the initial steps of cataract surgery, which includes the placement of an IOL. However, a few weeks after getting the RxLAL™, you will visit your Eye Clinic of Austin doctor for light treatments. The RxLAL™ is designed to be photosensitive, meaning the lens changes shape and power when exposed to ultraviolet light. During your light treatments, a special device is used to deliver UV light to the eyes to precisely adjust the lens based on your prescription. You will be able to live with your new vision for a few days and can opt for additional light treatments if you need further adjustments. Once you have achieved optimal vision, you will receive a final light treatment to prevent further changes. Patients will be required to wear UV-blocking glasses following cataract surgery and between light treatments.
Results
Recovery follows the same timeline as traditional cataract surgery, as the main difference is the type of lens being placed into the eye. RxLAL™ light treatments are delivered painlessly, but there may be an adjustment period right after treatment for vision to improve. After all light treatments have been completed, patients can expect clear vision with minimal, if any, dependence on eyeglasses and contact lenses.
