What is a Neuro-Ophthalmologist?
A neuro-ophthalmologist is a physician with specialized training in both neurology and ophthalmology who focuses on visual disorders that stem from neurological conditions. This subspecialty bridges the gap between the central nervous system and the visual pathways, encompassing the optic nerves, chiasm, tracts, radiations, and visual cortex, as well as the ocular motor system. Neuro-ophthalmologists evaluate and manage complex disorders such as optic neuropathies (including ischemic, inflammatory, compressive, and hereditary etiologies), visual field defects, papilledema, diplopia (double vision), nystagmus (abnormal eye movements), and afferent pupillary defects. They frequently diagnose and co-manage systemic and neurologic diseases that manifest with ocular symptoms, including multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, intracranial hypertension, brain tumors, strokes, and neurodegenerative disorders. Diagnostic workups often involve advanced neuroimaging (MRI, CT), visual field testing, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and electrophysiologic studies, underscoring the multidisciplinary nature of neuro-ophthalmologic care.
