Cataract Surgery Cost
Medicare and most insurance plans cover cataract surgery cost because it is seen as a medical necessity since it can cause blindness. The standard Monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) require no additional out-of-pocket cost to the patient. A Monofocal IOL will improve distance vision, but you will need glasses or contacts to see mid-range and up close.
If you choose to upgrade from a Monofocal IOL to a Multifocal, Accommodating, or Toric IOL, additional cost is required for the extra testing, follow-up care, and the lens itself. Because these lenses provide vision capabilities beyond a standard lens, Medicare and insurance companies consider them elective and thus do not cover the additional cost.
Your vision is our top priority at Eye Clinic of Austin. We will recommend whatever best meets your particular visual needs, explaining our reasoning. If our recommendation is an optional lens, then it is your choice if you want to pay the associated, uncovered costs to try to get even better vision than the covered, standard lens option. The financing options for vision correction have never been better and can mean the difference between enjoying sharp, clear vision now, versus waiting until you’ve saved up the money.
