What is a Cornea Specialist?
A cornea specialist is an ophthalmologist that specializes in surgical and medical management of corneal disorders. The cornea is the clear outer layer of the eye responsible for helping light enter and focus into the eye. Disorders affecting the cornea can result in significant reduction in vision. Common corneal disorders include keratoconus, abrasions, Fuch’s dystrophy, pterygium, infectious ulcers, visually significant scars, chemical burns, ocular surface cancers and neoplasia, and recurrent corneal erosions among others.
A cornea specialist has completed at least one year of additional fellowship training in cornea following a three year medical residency in ophthalmology after finishing medical school.
