Farhan A. Irshad, MD FACS and the Eye Clinic of Austin team are excited to announce the arrival of an innovative new procedure for Glaucoma patients – the iStent inject®. Just a few days ago and a week after the FDA gave the green light, Dr. Irshad was the first in Austin to implant an iStent inject in the eye of patient Beverly Hood.

No bigger than Abe Lincoln’s eye on a penny, the iStent® Trabecular Micro-Bypass Stent is to be used in association with cataract surgery to lessen intraocular pressure (IOP) in adult patients with mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma. The iStent is the smallest medical device ever approved by the FDA and is so tiny that the patient is unable to see or feel the device.

Patients across the world have experienced improvements and aid from the use of iStent Injects and the Eye Clinic of Austin team is thrilled to offer this groundbreaking option to those in the Austin area. Watch video from KVUE Austin news on Dr. Irshad’s iStent inject implant procedure.

“A small stent in their eye [can] help also reduce their pressure, so we can not only help them see better, but also reduce their pressure and sometimes we can help take these glaucoma patients off their drops,” said Dr. Irshad, Medical Director & Ophthalmologist at Eye Clinic of Austin.

We hope to help other patients find relief with this treatment in the near future, just like Beverly.

“Now I just feel marvelous. I’ve been praying just like ‘Oh lord please help me’ and I’m just jubilant,” said Hood. “I’m so happy with the outcome, I’m just happy.”
