Deciding on the Right IOL for Me

After deciding to undergo lens replacement surgery, the next step for patients is to choose the lens that is most compatible with their vision goals and lifestyle. The team at Eye Clinic of Austin offers patients a range of intraocular lenses, or IOLs. With so many choices, some patients may not know where to begin when selecting their IOL, which is why our team has outlined IOL choices below:

Monofocal IOL

IOL clear vision Austin Monofocal lenses only provide clear vision at a single distance, meaning glasses may still be needed on occasion. They are a popular IOL selection, and many patients choose to improve their distance vision with this type of IOL. A patient using a monofocal IOL can enjoy clear vision while driving, hiking, and participating in other activities, but may need reading glasses while using a laptop or reading small print. It is ideal in cases where patients want to significantly reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses after surgery, but do not mind using glasses during certain activities.  Monofocal lenses can also be used to get uncorrected near vision but then glasses would be needed to see at a distance.

Multifocal IOL

Also known as Lifestyle IOLs, multifocal lenses have more than one corrective zone. Patients with this lens can enjoy clear vision up close, far away, and at an intermediate distance. This option appeals to patients that want to eliminate their dependence on eyeglasses and contact lenses.  These lenses can sometimes produce starbursts and haloes at night around lights.

Toric IOL

Toric IOLs can correct vision problems caused by astigmatism and are a great option for patients that have this condition in addition to cataracts. For patients who want to prevent the need for other forms of treatment for astigmatism, toric IOLs may be the ideal choice.

Light Adjustable Lens

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the first and only lens that allows patients to customize their vision after surgery. This innovative lens is comprised of a special material that is designed to be adjusted post-surgery. Patients who select the LAL attend a post-surgical appointment with one of our doctors who will preview different vision outcomes for the patient, allowing them to choose the clearest vision possible.

EVO ICL

The EVO Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) is made up of a biocompatible material that provides comfort and a natural feel. This lens can correct vision for an array of prescriptions and is ideal for those who need a LASIK alternative.
