Summer is coming to a close and many recently graduated high school students will be moving away to attend college in just a few weeks. Whether moving to another state for school or just down the road at a local university, students should pay special attention to these eye care tips.
Take a break from screens & books.
Mom and dad probably won’t appreciate this tip, but it is important. With all the studying and screens college students will be staring at, it’s recommended to take a break every now and again to avoid dry eyes and eyestrain. Use the 20-20-20 rule – every 20 minutes look at an object that is 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Wash those hands.
Yes, mom has said it a dozen times throughout life, but it’s true! Washing hands can help students avoid conjunctivitis (also called pink eye), which can spread incredibly fast in schools and dorm rooms. It’s also good to avoid rubbing your eyes.
For the ladies, don’t share makeup.
Sharing makeup or makeup brushes may seem harmless, but it can quickly spread eye infections like herpes keratitis. It’s also important to throw away makeup after three months so infection-causing bacteria don’t grow in liquid or cream eye makeup.
Wear eye protection in sun and sports.
Whether it’s collegiate level or just fun intramurals, wearing eye protection during sports can save your vision. Almost 1 in 18 college athletes will get an eye injury when playing sports. And, don’t forget those cool shades when outside or at the pool. Sunglasses help protect eyes from photokeratitis, (often called snow blindness), benign growths on the eye’s surface, and cataracts later in life.
